Billie was pacing the floor on tenterhooks, wishing she hadnât opened her damn mouth. Now, here they were, hiding out in her parentsâ home, of all places.
âIf you donât pack that in, Iâm going to smack you.â
âWe shouldnât have come here. You shouldnât have taken her,â Billie shouted, pointing at the girl they had tied up sitting on the couch.
Daz took a few steps into her space, his forehead touching hers. âDonât tell me what I should and shouldnât do. Get us something to eat. I take it your parents have got food in the kitchen?â
âYes, Mum always has the cupboards stocked well. Hey, I ainât no chef. I didnât sign up to do all the cooking.â
He turned to glance at the snivelling girl in the corner. âYou want to end up with a busted nose, like her?â
Billie rushed into the kitchen and rifled through the cupboards. She found a few cans of baked beans and went to the freezer where she knew her mother kept a supply of bread for emergency purposes. This was one of those, wasnât it? Her parents were away at present, caring for her grandmother who had recently had a hip replacement. Her mother and father had retired early, once her father had sold his travel business for a seven-figure sum which had set them up for the rest of their lives. They spent most of their time either travelling abroad or visiting relatives. Her mother had rung her last week to say theyâd be away for the next few weeks, ensuring her gran, who was in her eighties, recovered from the surgery. Her gran was still an independent lady and lived in a bungalow in Lincolnshire.
Again, once they had arrived, theyâd put the car in the garage, out of sight of the other residents. This was Clifton, the posh area of Bristol, where it was evident how much money people were making by the pristine condition their homes and gardens were in.
Billie stared out the kitchen window at the immaculate garden just springing into life after the wet winter theyâd had. Why bring him here? I hate him for what heâs turned me into. Why did I have to mention this place?
A breath on the back of her neck made her gasp. âWhat are you lovingly gonna fix me to eat then?â
âBeans on toast. Iâm defrosting the bread now. Itâll be a good fifteen minutes yet.â
His arms encircled her waist, and he nuzzled his face into her neck. âI hate it when we fall out. I wish I could make it up to youânot possible with her in there.â
âI hate it, too. Why take someone else, Daz? That wasnât part of the plan.â
He spun her around and glared at her. The peaceful atmosphere suddenly dispersed, and his anger mounted once more. âAre you questioning me again? What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you want us to get caught?â
âNo. Please, donât shout at me. Youâre making me a nervous wreck.â
âStop trying my patience then.
